Living Soil vs. Hydro: Two Philosophies, One Plant

Growers argue about nothing so passionately as substrate. A fair comparison of living soil and hydroponics for the home scale.

Living soil sells itself on flavor and forgiveness: a well-built bed buffers pH swings, feeds slowly, and produces terpene profiles hydro growers quietly envy.

Hydroponics answers with speed and control. Vegetative growth runs a third faster, deficiencies correct in days rather than weeks, and there is no soil to haul up an apartment staircase.

The honest trade-off is labor shape. Soil asks for work up front — building, amending, composting — then mostly wants water. Hydro spreads the work across the whole cycle in reservoir changes and EC checks.

For a first grow in a small space, soil forgives the mistakes you have not made yet. For a third grow with a dialed room, hydro repays precision. The plant, famously, does not read the forums.
